In Denmark, you can get clean drinking water straight from the tap, even in public places – yet Danes buy an average of 21 litres of bottled water EACH year. We think that's completely bonkers, when you could both save the planet – and not least your own wallet.
In 2018, HOFOR published calculations showing that tap water is 900 times more environmentally friendly than bottled water. The figures indicate that when 1 litre of water leaves a Copenhagen tap, 0.0002 kg of CO2 is emitted from pumping, filtering, and transport.
When it comes to bottled water, extra CO2 is used in the production of the bottle, the bottling process, and the transportation of the bottle, meaning that 1 litre of bottled water costs an average of 0.18 kg of CO2 – or 900 times more than tap water. That's a considerable amount.
The same report states that 64 percent of Danes would be willing to cut down on their consumption if they knew more about the environmental consequences, such as the amount of CO2 emissions, when we use bottled water.
At Herthadalen, we use water straight from the tap. The source is artesian, which means the pressure itself brings the water up without using energy. This way, we avoid straining the environment – and if we continue with this approach, there will always be free groundwater in the taps (if we look after it, that is!). SO CHEERS TO THAT – AND SPREAD THE WORD!
